Trump threatens 50% tariff on Canadian aircraft
- US President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened neighbouring Canada with a new punitive tariff of 50% on aircraft sold in the United States.
Washington, 30 January 2026 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened neighbouring Canada with a new punitive tariff of 50% on aircraft sold in the United States.
Trump also said on his Truth Social platform that the US licence for Canadian business jet manufacturer Bombardier would be revoked.
He cited actions by Canadian authorities against Gulfstream, a US manufacturer of business aircraft, as the reason for the withdrawal of Bombardier's licence and the tariff threat.
Trump complained that Canada had not granted approval for several models from Bombardier's competitor, thereby effectively banning their sale in the neighbouring country.
"If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50% Tariff on any and all Aircraft sold into the United States of America," he said in his post.
Last week, Trump threatened a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods imported into the US if Ottawa were to sign a deal with Beijing.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney travelled to Beijing this month and subsequently announced closer cooperation with China. Canada is withdrawing some of its tariffs on Chinese electric cars, and in return, China wants to remove trade barriers for Canadian agricultural products.
Tensions between Washington and Ottawa have been escalating since Trump's return to the White House. As well as imposing tariffs on Canada, Trump has publicly advocated annexing the neighbouring country.
