Skopje, 13 May 2026 (MIA) - City General Hospital “September 8” has received a completely reconstructed surgery wing following a EUR 12 million investment through the TAV program. The reconstruction covers seven specialized surgery halls, departments for intensive care and pathology, administrative offices, the roof structure, clinical laboratories, and accompanying facilities.
At an event Wednesday in the hospital, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said this is a significant project for Macedonian healthcare resulting in, he said, the most modern building in the region.

“Before this reconstruction, one had to enter the surgery halls with an umbrella. The roof was leaking when it rained. What you cannot see now but was also included in the reconstruction is the complete reconstruction of the roof structure where the climate chambers are located, providing treated air with all parameters – humidity, cleanliness, etc. – as well as the section where the chillers and other electromechanical equipment are housed at the base of the building. When all of this is rounded off, we will have a whole that is modern and contemporary, something that does not exist in the region and of which, as citizens, we should be proud,” Mickoski said.
The head of the “8 September” hospital, Sinisha Stojanovski, said that after several decades the hospital now has a completely renovated surgery wing, as a capital project that will remain for future generations. He said the section would be put into use once disinfection activities are carried out, staff training is completed, and a permit is obtained from the relevant institutions for the use of the facilities.
“The surgery wing may even cut waiting lists in half, provided we have sufficient staff, which is why we must strengthen our staffing,” Stojanovski said, noting that services should be regionalized with staff rotation and the establishment of centers outside Skopje.
Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski said a major project is being completed, significant not only for Skopje but for the entire country.
“This is a top-level healthcare institution where, after this reconstruction, the best medical services will be available,” Nikoloski said.
Health Minister Azir Aliu also stressed that the City General Hospital “8 September” is receiving infrastructure built to world standards.
“This is not just a reconstruction of walls, but of the way we create and plan health policies,” Aliu said.
According to the General Manager of TAV Macedonia, Nejat Kurt, all surgery halls and intensive care units are equipped with the most modern equipment and comply with the latest medical standards and recommendations of the World Health Organization.
“We believe that every patient deserves dignified conditions for treatment, and every healthcare worker deserves modern working conditions. With this support, we want to contribute precisely to that, better care, greater efficiency, and higher quality of healthcare services,” Kurt said.
