Skopje, 9 May 2024 (MIA) – Parliament Speaker Jovan Mitreski will schedule a session for the inauguration of President-elect Gordana Siljanovska Davkova once he receives the State Election Commission’s report of the final results from the May 8 second round of the presidential elections, the Speaker’s office says.

The State Election Commission (SEC) should send the report by Friday 7 pm at the latest.

As soon as he receives the report, Mitreski will schedule an inauguration session, set to take place on Sunday (May 12) at noon.

After addressing the outgoing members of Parliament, Siljanovska Davkova will take a solemn oath, which marks the start of her five-year term.

The term of the outgoing President Stevo Pendarovski, who ran for re-election in this year’s polls, ends on May 12. 

After Siljanovska Davkova is inaugurated, the new Parliament should hold a constitutive session by May 28 at the latest, according to the new Parliament’s Rules of Procedures.

The constitutive session, which could last up to three days, should be convened by the current Parliament Speaker Jovan Mitreski. If he doesn’t convene it, a session can be convened on the 21st day after the elections by the oldest lawmaker, who will also preside over the session until a new speaker is elected. A president of the new assembly is expected to be elected by June 1 at the latest.

Ten days after the appointment of the new Parliament, the head of state should hand over a government formation mandate to a candidate of the party, i.e. parties that secured a majority in Parliament.

The prime minister-elect will have 20 days after being given the government formation mandate to propose ministers and submit the government’s program to the Parliament. The government is elected by the Parliament with a majority of votes out of the total number of MPs (120).

According to the preliminary results from Wednesday’s parliamentary elections announced by the State Election Commission on its website Thursday morning, with over 99.27% of the votes processed, VMRO-DPMNE’s coalition "Your Macedonia" has won 431,251 votes (43.23%) or 58 seats in the new 120-member Parliament.

SDSM’s “Coalition for European Future” obtained 153,250 votes (15.36%) - securing 18 seats, DUI’s European Front gained 137,486 votes (13.78%) - 19 seats, “Worth It” coalition garnered 106,991 votes (10.72%) - 13 seats, Levica has 67,338 votes (6.75%) - 6 seats, and ZNAM Movement won 55,539 votes (5.57%) - 6 seats.
