Skopje, 7 April 2025 (MIA) - President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova met Monday with the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina J. Mohammed, and addressed the UN resident coordinators from Europe and Central Asia.
Discussing the role of the United Nations as an organization created to protect peace, Siljanovska-Davkova and Mohammed agreed on the need for reform within the organization in line with modern challenges.
Touching on the country’s Euro-integration, the UN Deputy Secretary-General highlighted the importance of the UN’s support for the country as a small country that has been waiting too long to enter the European Union.
In her address to the resident coordinators, Siljanovska-Davkova stressed that despite the significant changes in the world, the UN’s structures and procedures have remained largely unchanged.
“The Security Council must reform and be more responsible when it comes to maintaining international peace and security. The General Assembly must overcome its role as a debate body and grow into a key body in the policymaking process. The verdicts of the International Court of Justice must become binding for all countries,” Siljanovska-Davkova said, adding that she still believes in the need for effective multilateralism with “a strong, reformed United Nations”.
The President also highlighted the country’s commitment to integrating the Sustainable Development Goals within its national strategy, focusing on climate activities, equality and the rule of law.
