Multiple explosions reported in Iranian port city, island in Hormuz

Tehran, 8 May 2026 (dpa/MIA) - Several explosions were reported along Iran’s Gulf coast on Thursday evening, Iranian media said, as military tensions with the United States remain high.

Loud blasts were heard near the port city of Bandar Abbas, according to the Iranian news agency Fars.

The cause of the explosions was initially unclear.

In a separate report, Fars said there had been exchanges of fire between Iranian forces and an unspecified “enemy,” adding that a port area on Qeshm Island was among the sites hit. No further details were immediately available.

Iranian media speculated about a possible airstrike by the United Arab Emirates.

Iran’s armed forces had attacked oil facilities in the Gulf state just days earlier.

The Tasnim news agency, which is close to Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards, wrote: “Should the matter be confirmed, the Emirates will pay the price for their hostile action.”

Residents in coastal areas had also reported explosions on social media. On Qeshm Island, in the Strait of Hormuz, witnesses described hearing blasts and seeing lights over the water, a prominent activist who goes by Vahid Online said, citing local residents.

A ceasefire has been in place for just over a month in the Iran conflict, but military tensions remain high.

US President Donald Trump has voiced optimism that a deal with Iran could be reached soon, with his administration awaiting Tehran’s response to a 14-point proposal to end the war.

Iran said earlier on Thursday it is still reviewing the text and will deliver its reply via mediator Pakistan.
