Mitsotakis: A warning to our neighbor - you're not off to a good start

Athens, 26 June 2024 (MIA) - A message and a warning to Skopje and Tirana Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has issued in his speech at a meeting of the New Democracy parliamentary group, MIA's Athens correspondent reports.

Refering to the country as the northern neighbor, Mitsotakis said it has been violating the international law and the obligations from international agreements while also criticizing indirectly the opposition party Syriza.

"Regarding those who to this day at events and conferences continue to praise the agreement marred with problems, they should see the current behavior of Skopje, which includes their problematic experiments. Those are traps we have warned about before. We're warning now our northern neighbor with simple and clear words: You haven't gotten off to a good start by violating international law and your obligations stemming from the international agreements," Mitsotakis said noting the same goes for Albania after yesterday's court decision about the prison sentence of Fredi Beleri.

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis also touched on the relations with the country in an interview with a Cyprus TV station reiterating Greece's positions.

He responded to comments by PM Hristijan Mickoski, who in an interview with a local TV station on MOnday said "the man either doesn't understand the Prespa Agreement or he is reading it the wrong way."

"The name of the neighboring country is North Macedonia in erga omnes, both in the country and elsewhere. It is a breach of international law for office-holders in their public statements to use a name other than the one defined in the international law and the national constitution. In this case, it would be a good thing to respect treaties, because it involves the path of North Macedonia towards the European family, to respect the rule of law and first and foremost, to respect the constitution of the country itself," stated Gerapetritis.
