Mickoski: Not true that migrants will be taken in; SDSM is fearmongering

Skopje, 15 December 2025 (MIA) — Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski dismissed as untrue recent UK media reports on an alleged agreement with the British government for the country to accommodate migrants.

In a TV Sitel interview Monday evening, PM Mickoski accused the opposition party SDSM for fearmongering.

"Not only is there no truth to this, but I really cannot understand these political gymnastics the opposition is doing in our country by spreading fear and panic among citizens. This is irresponsible behavior," Mickoski said.

He said previous, SDSM-led governments were those who had had pro-migrant policies.

"They pursued a policy of integrating migrants," Mickoski said, citing a 2017 National Strategy by the then Ministry of Social Policy and Labor.

"Based on that strategy, they were sending memos to municipalities to look for suitable places and locations for potential camps or residences for people who are foreign citizens and who would be integrated. Read: migrants," he said.

According to the prime minister, the issue was used by the opposition to direct the public attention away from the problems in their own party.

"But I cannot understand their PR strategy because this will backfire so hard. March, April, June 2026, 2027 will come, and there will be no migrants. So what do we do then?" he asked.

He reiterated that the government had not made an agreement with the UK or any other government on accepting migrants.

"I want to send a message to the citizens there is not any kind of acceptance of migrants, legal or illegal," Mickoski said.

"No such agreement," he pointed out, "exists nor will it exist while I am prime minister." mr/
