Germany's Frankfurt airport suspends flights due to climate action

Frankfurt, 25 July 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Air traffic at Germany's Frankfurt airport has been temporarily suspended after activists from the climate group Last Generation managed to gain access to the airport grounds, police said on Thursday morning.

According to a dpa reporter on the ground, several protesters entered through a fence in the early hours and glued themselves to the tarmac at Germany's biggest airport.

"Due to an ongoing demonstration at the airport flights are currently suspended," the airport said on its website.

Passengers have been asked not to travel to the airport for the time being and check the status of their flights online.

"All security authorities are currently working to resolve disruptions as quickly as possible," a spokesman for federal police stationed at the airport said.

Six Last Generation activists had gained access to the airport's runways, the climate group said on social media platform X, calling for an end to fossil fuel use by 2030.

"The continued extraction and burning of oil, gas and coal is a threat to our existence," the group said.

A police spokesman initially did not comment on the exact number of protesters.

The action comes after Last Generation activists glued themselves to the tarmac at Germany's Cologne/Bonn airport on Wednesday, leading to the suspension of flights for about three hours.
