Gashi: Fresh political momentum increases the country's willingness to accelerate EU accession process

Skopje, 24 April 2025 (MIA) – There’s a fresh political momentum for the country to increase its willingness to accelerate the EU accession process after recent global and European developments, said Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi.

He said Thursday that parliamentary diplomacy is his top priority.

“I want the country to further develop it. It is a rising trend in developed democracies. As a result, I’d had the chance to have historic meetings in Berlin, Paris, Stockholm, Brussels, the European Parliament and at the NATO HQ. After the events in Ukraine, the war and the U.S. presidential elections, there is a fresh political context and momentum for our country to accelerate its EU accession process,” Gashi told today’s press briefing.

The country, he noted, has a lot of friends that want to help and I hope the issue of constitutional change, considered an obstacle, would be overcome.

We’re working on all levels, Gashi said, and as Speaker, I’ve been using all tools and opportunities to develop parliamentary democracy.

“In this context, we have been working the most on explaining the situation we’re in involving the biggest obstacle – the constitutional change. We have a lot of friends who want to help us and I sincerely hope that we will finally manage to overcome this obstacle, too,” Gashi told reporters.
