Flu cases to continue to rise, expected to peak in mid-February

Skopje, 20 January 2025 (MIA) - Health authorities expect the number of flu cases to continue to grow and to peak towards the middle of February. The end of winter break and gatherings in closed spaces due to the low temperatures are some of the factors expected to drive the surge in cases.

“Every year, the number of flu cases rises until the middle of February, when the peak is expected. This has been the case for years. The peak occurs in the second half of February. The numbers will continue to grow, but they aren’t any different compared to previous years,” the spokesperson of the Commission for Infectious Diseases, Zlate Mehmedovikj, told MIA.

Mehmedovikj said children with flu-like symptoms should self-isolate and stay home.

According to the latest report by the Public Health Institute, 1.053 cases of flu or similar infections were reported between January 6 and January 12, 3.2 times more compared to the preceding week.

The Institute stressed that vaccination remains the most efficient protection against seasonal flu.
