Filipche: Everything PM says is an excuse, constitutional changes need to be adopted

Skopje, 9 May 2026 (MIA) - In a statement to journalists on May 9 – Victory over Fascism Day and Europe Day, SDSM leader Venko Filipche said the Government is keeping the country isolated from Europe and stressed that the constitutional amendments must be adopted so the country can begin negotiations for membership in the European Union.

“Today we celebrate Europe Day and Victory over Fascism Day. On Europe Day we could have had a lot more reasons to celebrate, like Montenegro for example, which is leading the way and closing chapters, and will become a member of the European Union next year. Unfortunately, we are being led by an organized crime group headed by Hristijan Mickoski, which wants the country to remain isolated, without reforms, without a European judiciary, and without rich and happy citizens,” Filipche said.

Asked to comment on the Prime Minister’s speech in which he sent a message for unity, Filipche reiterated that the constitutional amendments must be adopted.

“Everything the Prime Minister says is just an excuse. It is well known what we need to do to begin negotiations. We need to adopt the constitutional amendments. What does unity mean for him? Does it mean that we should support him in not adopting the amendments? So that they can continue to steal? That won’t happen. Because Europe will happen when we come to power after the next elections and they will all be held accountable,” Filipche said, noting that Hristijan Mickoski should be “a persona non grata” on Europe Day.
