Arsenal oust holders Madrid, draw enough for Inter against Bayern

Berlin, 17 April 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Defending champions Real Madrid are out of the Champions League after a 2-1 home defeat to Arsenal, while Inter Milan confirmed their spot in the semi-finals with a 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Arsenal will now face Paris Saint-Germain, while Inter will have Barcelona on their way to the final.

Arsenal had a 3-0 advantage from the first leg and Bukayo Saka made up for a missed penalty in the first half to give them a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute.

Vinicius Junior pulled one back just two minutes later, but Arsenal secured they would continue in the competition when Gabriel Martinelli scored the winner in stoppage time.

Bayern were down 2-1 after the first leg, but levelled the tie in the 52nd through Harry Kane. But Inter turned the game around with Lautaro Martinez and former Bayern player Benjamin Pavard.

Eric Dier gave Bayern a spark of hope in the 76th, but despite a huge late pressure, the Germans fell one goal short of taking the game to extra-time.

No miraculous comeback for Madrid

In the semi-finals last season, Real Madrid scored two late goals to secure a 2-1 comeback win in the second leg against Bayern and book a spot in the final.

This year, however, the team led by coach Carlo Ancelotti couldn't stage another magical comeback after a 3-0 defeat in the first leg. Bayern, meanwhile, will miss the chance of playing the final at their own Allianz Arena in Munich on May 31.

Arsenal had the chance to increase their advantage in the 13th after Mikel Merino was brought down in the box by Raul Asencio. But Saka's spot-kick was saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Madrid were also awarded a penalty in the 23rd after Declan Rice fouled Kylian Mbappe. But the decision was overturned after a five-minute video review.

Saka, meanwhile, made up for his missed penalty as he collected Merino's through-pass to score from close range in the 65th.

Two minutes later, however, Vinicius Junior intercepted the ball from a distracted William Saliba on the edge of the box before slotting it into the net.

Madrid still had a mountain to climb and their chances were all but over when Martinelli wrapped up matters for Arsenal with a superb late goal.

"We didn't create the goal chances we wanted to. We never let the game get completely out of our grasp but it was a stop-start affair, full of interruptions, and things didn't seem to fall our way when they were 50-50," Madrid captain Lucas Vasquez told Movistar.

This is the first time since the 2008-09 season that Arsenal reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Last Champions League match for Müller?

Bayern icon Thomas Müller is now level with Lionel Messi as the third player with most Champions League matches (163), but might have made his final appearance in the competition.

His contract with Bayern expires this summer and it won't be extended, while he's yet to decide what to do in the future.

Müller had Bayern's first big chance, but was blocked by Matteo Darmian in the 36th.

But the Bavarians found their way to the goal in the 52nd. Leon Goretzka recovered the ball after a bad clearance from the Inter defence and found Harry Kane in the box, who slotted the ball into the net.

Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig made a big save to deny Marcus Thuram in the 54th, but couldn't stop Inter top scorer Martinez in the 58th.

Pavard missed a header after Federico Dimarco's corner, but Martinez was there to take the ball and fire it past Urbig.

Darmian had his effort blocked by Dier in the 61st, but Pavard didn't miss his second chance and headed in Inter's second from the resulting corner.

Dier scored from Serge Gnabry's cross to give Bayern new hopes in the 76th and the Bavarians got close to extending their time in the competition.

But Kane fired a big chance well over the bar in the 91st, goalkeeper Yann Sommer made a huge save to deny Müller in the 94th and Kingsley Coman struck the ball narrowly over the bar in the final play of the game.

"We will remember this game for a long time, Inter never give up: We have personality, heart and head. We suffered, but we showed once again that we can do great things," Martinez told broadcasters Prime Video.

Inter last reached the semi-finals in 2022-23, when they made it to the final and lost to Manchester City.

The Milan team had beaten Bayern in their previous two Champions League knockout stage meetings: in the 2009-10 final, while also eliminating the German side in 2010-11.
