Skopje, 1 February 2026 (MIA) - Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Sunday that 40 new garbage trucks for Skopje's public sanitation company Communal Hygiene will be purchased through the Ministry of Transport in cooperation with the World Bank.
He pointed out that this procurement will resolve one of the biggest long-standing problems in the company's operations, i.e. the outdated, neglected and decrepit vehicles, which seriously hampered the maintenance of public hygiene in the capital. According to Mickoski, the situation was further complicated by overstaffing, as well as insufficient efficiency of some employees.
"I am certain that the 40 new trucks will significantly improve the hygiene situation in Skopje. As we announced in the campaign, and as the Mayor himself announced, hygiene is our top priority and this process is moving in that direction," said Mickoski.
He noted that the procurement process is expected to be completed by late spring, and the delivery of the vehicles to begin by the end of the year. According to the PM, the new garbage trucks will enable more efficient work by the Communal Hygiene.
"Forty garbage trucks are a huge deal. Not long ago, we had a presentation in Bitola of another project that is also supported by international financial institutions, and it also has a grant component, i.e. the regional landfill in Novaci. Part of that project includes procurement of garbage trucks for the municipalities of the Southwest and Pelagonia regions. We are trying to revive and put back into operation everything that was stalled, not worked on, stolen, or destroyed. This cannot be done overnight. We need to be patient," PM Mickoski said.
