Hoxha: Water management essential for economic growth, social equality

Skopje, 27 March 2026 (MIA) — Water management is essential for economic growth and social equality, Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Muamet Hoxha said Friday during an event marking World Water Day.

Hoxha said the event also marked the start a public consultation process for the Vardar River Basin, aimed at creating the country’s first water management plan that meets European Union standards.

"Sustainable solutions can be created only with the participation of those who depend on them most," Hoxha said, highlighting the importance of transparency, inclusion and responsibility in water management.

In his remarks, Swiss Ambassador Christoph Sommer said the theme of World Water Day 2026, "Where Water Flows, Equality Grows," was a reminder that inclusive governance is a prerequisite for equitable development.

He pointed out that industry sectors reliant on water generate nearly one-third of the country's gross value added and more than a third of its exports.

"The protection and sustainable management of water is not only an environmental priority, but also the basis for economic resilience, public health and social prosperity," Sommer said.

The event featured a performance by Swiss-based Chinese-Canadian artist and water justice activist Charlotte Qin and ended with a panel discussion on gender and social inclusion in water and flood risk management.

World Water Day is observed annually on March 22 to raise public awareness of the need to sustainably manage freshwater resources. mr/
