Croatia reports rising number of animal samples positive for anthrax

Zagreb, 30 July 2025 (Hina/MIA) -- The Croatian Veterinary Institute reported that out of 79 received samples of deceased livestock from the Šibenik-Knin County area, 59 have been processed, with 27 testing positive for anthrax.

The samples that tested positive for anthrax came from 23 cattle, two goats, one sheep, and one deer. Of these positive results, 10 were confirmed Tuesday.

Positive cases were found in the municipalities of Vrlika, Civljane, Biskupija, Drniš, Ružić and Kijevo.

Twenty samples were deemed unsuitable for bacteriological testing due to advanced decay, and 13 samples are still being processed.

The first confirmed case of anthrax in Croatia was reported on July 18 in the Municipality of Vrlika. Initial suspicion about an infectious disease arose on July 7 in the Vrlika village of Maovice.

A designated anthrax district was established on July 21 with strict restrictions on animal movement and feeding, and vaccination efforts began.

The government announced compensation for farmers for livestock lost to anthrax, ranging from €1,500 to €1,700 per animal.
