Trump: We will never allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon

Washington, 25 February 2026 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would never allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon in his State of the Union address.

"My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy," Trump told both chambers of the US Congress in Washington. "But one thing is certain, I will never allow the world's number one sponsor of terror, which they are by far, to have a nuclear weapon."

Trump said he had not yet received any commitment from the Iranian government that it would renounce nuclear weapons.

Iran has been insisting for years that its nuclear programme is for civilian purposes only. However, the country does not want to renounce uranium enrichment. Highly enriched uranium is needed to build nuclear bombs.

The United States and Iran are currently negotiating over Iran's controversial nuclear programme, but there has been no tangible progress so far.

Trump has threatened Tehran with an attack should negotiations fail. Washington has recently significantly increased its military presence in the region.

Last June, Israel waged war on Iran for 12 days, bombing key nuclear facilities in Iran together with the US. Iran responded with massive rocket attacks on Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv.
