Skopje, 2 February 2025 (MIA) – Thousands of citizens rallied Sunday at a peaceful protest in Skopje honoring Frosina Kulakova, a young woman killed by a drunk driver while crossing a street in downtown Skopje on Wednesday. Protesters demanded justice for Frosina and all other victims of traffic accidents.
The march kicked off near the location of the accident on the Partizanski Odredi boulevard in downtown Skopje, protesters then proceeded to move to the Parliament building, Prosecutor’s Office and the Criminal Court. In front of every building, they honored Frosina with three minutes of silence.
“Security is a right, not a privilege”, “no more impunity”, “we aren’t dying from accidents, we are dying from corruption”, and “no justice, no peace” were some of the messages written on the signs carried by protesters voicing their anger but also hope for change.
Frosina’s father, Todor Kulakov, who was present at the protest alongside other members of the family, thanked protesters for the support and stressed the case would have already been closed if it wasn’t for the citizens.
“I want you to trust me when I say that if it wasn’t for the pressure from the public, the case of Frosina would have already been placed in some drawer,” he said.
Frosina was killed while she was crossing the Partizanski Odredi boulevard on Wednesday by 20-year-old Vasil Jovanov from Skopje, who drove drunk, didn’t have a license and ran a red light.
Jovanov has been placed in 30-day detention. He had previous records of drug trafficking and another traffic accident, but did not serve time.
Sunday’s protest under the slogan “Who is next?” was the second one held in the nation’s capital since Frosina’s death. On Friday, citizens honored Frosina and other victims by lighting candles, laying flowers and demanding justice.
Peaceful gatherings were also held in Frosina’s hometown of Negotino, as well as in Kavadarci.
