Skopje, 13 December 2024 (MIA) - President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova received Friday the credentials of the newly appointed Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium, Paul Lambert, based in Sofia.

During the credential presentation ceremony, President Siljanovska Davkova said that Belgium is a strong friend and a sincere ally of North Macedonia's European integration process. She also noted that over the 30 years of diplomatic relations, the two countries have developed dynamic political ties and a solid level of cooperation in multiple areas, the President’s Office said in a press release.

“Belgium, as one of the founding countries of the European Union, has been and remains a strong promoter of our European integration processes. We deserve to begin accession negotiations without further delay. The government and I remain fully committed to the reforms related to EU integration. This process must be carried out in accordance with the Copenhagen criteria. If the reintegration into Europe is not facilitated, a harmful precedent will be set for other countries in the region,” Siljanovska said.

Emphasizing that the Macedonian people share the same values as the Belgians, Siljanovska Davkova expressed hope that the Ambassador will make his own contribution to our European integration.

“We have no doubt that our Belgian friends will help us in becoming part of the European family, a move that will open a new chapter in our history, bring fresh energy to Macedonian institutions and citizens, and spark a renewed dedication to the European idea,” Siljanovska Davkova said.

Noting that Belgium is a key trading partner, President Siljanovska Davkova expressed her interest and readiness to enhance and expand cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, especially in the economic sector.

In his address, Ambassador Lambert, noting the three-decade continuity of bilateral relations built on shared values and commitments, emphasized that Belgium recognizes the important role our country plays as a NATO member in global security and regional stability.

“Your country is fully aligned with the EU's common foreign and security policy, including regarding Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, thus sending a strong signal of its strategic choice - the EU and confirming itself as a reliable partner. You consistently demonstrate your political commitment to European integration, as well as your ambition to move forward in the negotiations,” Ambassador Lambert said.

Emphasizing the advantages of free trade, he expressed his support for the Belgian-Macedonian Business Club, established in August 2023, which aims to foster a favourable environment for long-term economic growth, job creation, and improved living standards, while also highlighting the interest of Belgian companies in our country.

In his speech, he acknowledged with satisfaction our country's efforts to safeguard the interests of the small Belgian community and its contribution to the growth of bilateral relations.

President Siljanovska Davkova wished the Ambassador all the best in his diplomatic mission and expressed confidence that he would be dedicated to enhancing the friendly relations.
