Skopje, 13 December 2024 (MIA) - The announced strong action in the judiciary involves comprehensive reforms. There must be a functional system with accountability for judges and prosecutors who fail to meet ethical standards or engage in corrupt activities, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said in an interview with Faktor.

“I do not understand the concern that these reforms could be seen as pressure on the judiciary. However, our approach is rooted in respecting the rule of law and our goal is to strengthen the independence of the judiciary, not to compromise it,” Mickoski noted.

He added that corruption remains an ongoing issue and a major obstacle to economic growth, public trust and EU integration.

“This government is dedicated to tackling corruption directly, through both systemic reforms and decisive action. One of the first steps is strengthening and depoliticizing institutions, ensuring that all institutions function independently, with no individuals using their power to dictate court decisions or construct cases,” he underlined.

He pointed out that increasing transparency through the digitalization of public services is a key part of the government's strategy.

“By reducing bureaucratic discretion in processes such as public procurement, we will succeed in minimizing opportunities for corruption, and certainly put an end to secret contract dealings. Eradicating corruption will take time, but our commitment to building a more accountable system is unwavering. We are obligated to meet the expectations of our citizens,” Mickoski said in the interview.
