Serbia PM resigns, 24-hour traffic blockade by students in Belgrade ends

Zagreb, 28 January 2025 (Hina/MIA) — Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević has tendered his resignation at an extraordinary government session on Tuesday, according to the Serbian news agency Tanjug.

On Tuesday morning, the 24-hour blockade of one of the key traffic hubs in Belgrade, launched by disgruntled students on Monday, ended.

Tens of thousands of students and citizens participated in the protest, which was part of a series of demonstrations across Serbia that have been ongoing for nearly three months following the collapse of a concrete canopy at the Novi Sad railway station, in which 15 people were killed and two more were seriously injured.

The wave of protests demanding accountability from the authorities for the Nov. 1 tragedy has grown into a student revolt.

The escalation occurred after students from the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade were attacked by provocateurs and thugs during a commemorative gathering, where, every day at 11:52 am, a 15-minute silence had been observed in honor of the Novi Sad victims.

Students have been blocking over 60 faculties in all four state university centres.

The students have four key demands - the publication of the full documentation related to the reconstruction of the Novi Sad railway station, criminal accountability for all those involved in what they consider to be a corrupt project, the effective functioning of institutions and the establishment of a just society governed by the rule of law, and the release of all activists arrested during the protests, as well as penalties for those who attacked and injured demonstrators.

On Monday, President Aleksandar Vučić said, amidst the student traffic blockade in Belgrade, that he would fulfill all their demands and pardon those arrested during the protests so far, while also announcing a government reshuffle.

The students responded that their demands had not been met and that they would continue with the blockades.
