Powerful earthquake strikes off Italy's southern coast

Rome, 2 June 2026 (dpa/MIA) - A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Italy's Calabria region early on Tuesday and was felt as far away as Naples, news agency ANSA reported.
The earthquake's epicentre was in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the city of Cosenza, some 240 kilometres south-east of Naples.
The National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology put the magnitude of the tremor at 6.1 at a depth of 250 kilometres, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the magnitude was 6.2.
According to ANSA, the earthquake was felt across Calabria and as far as the Vesuvian area near Naples to the north and the Basilicata region to the east.
The agency said there were initially no reports of damage, but checks were being carried out.
