Exhibition honors legacy of Lazar Sokolov

Skopje, 18 March 2026 (MIA) — An exhibition documenting the life and legacy of Macedonian intellectual Lazar Sokolov, a key figure in the political and economic development of the Macedonian state, opens Wednesday at 7:30 pm at the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle for Independence.

The exhibit, titled "Lazar Sokolov: Life and Work," was curated by Ilija Vasileski.

It features photographs, personal items and historical documents showing how Sokolov helped build the country's early government and economy.

Among the archival materials on display will be the files kept on him by the state security office back in the Socialist Republic of Macedonia era.

An economist educated in Zagreb, Sokolov fought in the anti-fascist movement during World War II. He later served as a high-ranking member of the Communist Party and was a delegate to the historic first session of the Anti-Fascist Assembly ASNOM, which helped establish the Macedonian state.

The exhibit also looks at his work as commissioner for the national economy, a member of the National Assembly and a respected scholar who wrote numerous papers on economics.

The exhibition runs through mid-April. mr/
