Herning, 2 February 2026 (dpa/MIA) - World and Olympic handball champions Denmark added the European championship title to their trophy cabinet on Sunday after a 34-27 win against Germany.
Led by top scorer Simon Pytlick, with eight goals, the Danes won on home soil in Herning to claim their first European title in 14 years and third overall.
Denmark have not lost against Germany since 2016, with victories including a 39-26 demolition in the 2024 Olympics gold medal match in Paris, 40-30 at last year's world championships and 31-26 in the group stage at the Euros.
"We are disappointed today, but tomorrow we will be even more hungry to beat the Danes. We played an excellent tournament. I'm convinced that this will be another step in our development," Germany team manager Benjamin Chatton said.
"Hopefully, we will be back in the final against the Danes next time."
Germany were in the final for the first time since they won the title in 2016.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who attended the match, wrote on X: "What a final, what a strong European championship. You fought hard and showed nerves of steel and team spirit. We are proud of you."
Earlier, Croatia defeated Iceland 34-33 to claim bronze.
