Skopje, 22 May 2026 (MIA) - Minister of Digital Transformation Stefan Andonovski told 4TV in an interview on Thursday evening that state infrastructure was the target of a serious and sophisticated cyberattack last weekend.

According to the Ministry, the cyberattack was a DDoS attack targeting the websites of the Government, the ministries, and the uslugi.gov.mk national website, and aiming to overload the systems and disrupt their availability.

Minister Andonovski said the institutions recognized the threat on time and reacted in a coordinated manner, placing the attack under control ensuring there was no disruption in the security of the data.

“There will be attacks. We must remain vigilant. As a NATO member state we must approach the protection of digital infrastructure and the data within state systems with the highest level of seriousness,” Andonovski stressed.

According to the checks carried out, no data has been infiltrated, stolen, or deleted. State data remains protected, and the attack did not succeed in breaching the security mechanisms put in place to safeguard the systems.

Initial analyses show that the attacks originated mainly from abroad, through proxy servers, in order to conceal the real origin. The case has been handed over to the Interior Ministry, which will lead the further investigation.

Andonovski stressed that this attack is yet another confirmation that cybersecurity is not merely a technical issue, but a matter of national security, institutional maturity, and trust in digital services.

“This was a serious test for the system, but also proof that the country is building capacities for a swift, coordinated, and effective response. I want to commend the team at the Ministry, the government CIRT, and all economic operators we cooperate with. The threat was recognized in time, coordination was swift, and the systems were restored to normal,” Andonovski said.
