Four dead after series of avalanches in northern Italy

Rome, 8 February 2026 (dpa/MIA) - Four people were killed and several were injured in a series of avalanches in northern Italy on Saturday.
In the Valtellina region of the Alps, an avalanche struck three ski tourers, killing two.
In Trentino, the Italian mountain rescue service reported two avalanches, each involving a fatality.
There was also an incident in the Aosta Valley on the border with Switzerland and France.
In the Aosta Valley, an avalanche swept away two ski tourers from a group of five. However, thanks to their equipment, they managed to free themselves from the snow.
The incidents all occurred on a day with a very high avalanche risk, with a level-three warning in effect, on Europe's five-part avalanche danger scale.
