Skopje, 22 March 2025 (MIA) - The Roma Foundation for Europe expresses its deepest condolences following the tragic loss of 59 young lives in Kochani. These individuals represented not only beloved children, siblings, and friends—but the future of the country. Our thoughts are with the families, communities, and everyone affected by this unimaginable loss, the Foundation said in a press release.
On behalf of the Foundation, President Zeljko Jovanovic visited the Embassy of North Macedonia in Brussels to convey solidarity and express condolences. He signed the book of condolences and informed Zulfi Ismaili, Ambassador of the North Macedonia to the European Union, of the Foundation’s decision to donate EUR 10,000 in support of the victims’ families.
“This tragedy is not only a profound personal loss, but also a painful reminder of systemic failures. It should never have happened—and we cannot allow it to happen again. Structural safeguards must be strengthened to better protect people, especially young people, from preventable harm,” said Zeljko Jovanovic.
“May we let the memory of those we lost serve as a call to action: for a more accountable society, for greater safety, and for a future in which such tragedies no longer occur,” added Jovanovic.
The European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture, the Roma Education Fund, the Roma Entrepreneurship Development Initiative, and Roma for Democracy join the Roma Foundation for Europe in standing with the victims of this tragedy—and in reaffirming their shared commitment to a future in which such losses are no longer tolerated as inevitable, reads the press release.
