Mickoski: Safe City showing results – traffic accidents halved, less than 500 violations daily

Skopje, 5 February 2026 (MIA) - With the introduction of the Safe City traffic control system the number of accidents has halved, and there have been no victims since its official launch on February 1, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said in an interview Thursday for national broadcaster MRT.

The Prime Minister said order would be established in all areas of society in 2026, including traffic. He voiced confidence that the Safe City system is sustainable and thanked the citizens for complying with the rules and driving safely. Mickoski said the number of traffic violations in Skopje is now lower than in the past during organized operations by the Interior Ministry.

“The facts show that drivers are more careful, the number of traffic violations has dropped. The hope is that the number of traffic accidents will also drop this year, reducing the number of injured and dead, which was practically the key goal of this project and its implementation,” Mickoski said.

Comparing the current situation to the past, Mickoski said if in the past the Interior Ministry registered around 1.200 violations during organized operations, now that number has dropped below 500 on a daily basis. The Prime Minister noted that a similar trend can be seen in the other cities and traffic corridors covered by the Safe City system.

Mickoski stressed that as a NATO member, the country must ensure the rule of law is respected.

“This is a year in which order is established: order in traffic, order in other areas of society, and there must be order if we want to be a country and look like a country,” Mickoski said.
