Embassy of Greece, IZIIS organize conference “Earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes: Learning to live with the threat”
- The Embassy of Greece in Skopje and IZIIS (Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology – Saints Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje) organized a conference titled “Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Volcanoes: Learning to live with the threat” in Skopje on Tuesday.

Skopje, 25 February 2025 (Embassy of Greece/MIA) - The Embassy of Greece in Skopje and IZIIS (Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology – Saints Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje) organized a conference titled “Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Volcanoes: Learning to live with the threat” in Skopje on Tuesday.
The event was greeted by IZIIS Director, Prof. Dr. Igor Gjorgjiev, and H.E. the Ambassador of Greece in North Macedonia, Ms. Sophia Philippidou, the Embassy of Greece said in a press release.
Prof. Gjorgjiev stressed that the scientific cooperation between IZIIS and Greek Universities and Research centers has extended over the last decade, especially with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the National Observatory of Athens, Democritus University of Thrace and University of Patras, strengthening significantly in recent years.
Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Bogdanovic, Head of the Department for Dynamic Testing and Informatics of IZIIS made a presentation of IZIIS’ scope and mission followed by the Screening of the documentary "Disaster Theories: Earthquakes, Tsunamis, and Volcanoes".
Keynote speaker Dr. Nikos Theodoulidis, Seismologist, Research Director of ITSAK-EPPO (Research and Technical Institute of Engineering Seismology and Earthquake Engineering) Thessaloniki, focused on the concept of collaboration in mitigating the seismic risk in his address titled “Towards Seismic Risk Mitigation in the Balkan Area”.
The event was concluded with a guided tour and an earthquake simulation at IZIIS Laboratory, reads the press release.
