Iran says major differences remain despite progress in peace talks

Tehran, 19 April 2026 (dpa/MIA) - Major differences remain in the peace negotiations between Iran and the United States, Iranian Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf told state media on Sunday.

Ghalibaf told the Tasnim news agency some points of agreement with the US had been reached, but there were “major differences” on other topics.

The Strait of Hormuz was under Iran’s control, Ghalibaf said in the interview broadcast on Sunday.

He added that the US decision to blockade Iranian ports was "foolish" and "ignorant."

After the US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, Tehran responded by effectively blocking the strait, threatening to attack any vessels that had not obtained its permission to transit the waterway.

Tehran lifted the blockade on Friday but closed it again on Saturday after US President Donald Trump said the US would keep its blockade on Iranian ports.

The narrow sea passage is a critical chokepoint for global energy trade and the blockade caused major disruptions, sending energy prices soaring and sparking frantic measures to prevent fuel shortages.
