Strumica, 26 March 2024 (MIA) — Spring cabbage in Strumica is being sold at 40 denars per kilogram and marketed across the Balkans as well as in all EU countries and Ukraine, Strumica's MIA correspondent reports.
The purchase price is acceptable for traders.
"Until three days ago, we had higher demand for cabbage, but the supply was low. For the upcoming Easter holidays in Europe, we will export more [spring cabbage] today and I hope it continues after the holiday," Strumica trader Blagoj Vitanov said, adding that the price, however, would likely drop as supply increases.
Cabbage farmers are also happy with the price.
"The purchase price is good for now and if it stays like this, it will mean a lot to us. But our experience from the past few years has taught us that as the supply grows, the price drops. Hopefully it won't drop below the threshold of profitability," several cababge growers from the village of Bansko said.
The bigger producers of cabbage and those who planted their crops earlier are already nearing the end of the harvest. The peak of the harvest is expected to happen in early April.
In addition to spring cabbage, local farmers are selling hot peppers at 7 denars apiece.
Spring cabbage is planted on thousand hectares in the Strumica region and the expected yield is over 50 thousand tons. mr/
