Skopje, 30 December 2025 (MIA) - Construction works have begun on the first section of the City Train project. The agreement is worth Mden 360 million, and includes complete reconstruction and upgrade of the current route.
According to Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, this means safer, faster and more efficient rail traffic.
In addition, the PM stressed, the construction of a high-speed railway on Corridor X remains one of the strategic priorities.
"The Strategic Partnership Agreement with the United Kingdom provides funds for capital projects that put the railway where it belongs - as a key link between the Balkans and Europe. These are not isolated projects. This is a systemic renewal of the railway sector, an investment in the economy, in the ecology and in the country's European future. We are putting railways back on the track of development - with a plan, with responsibility and with a clear vision for a modern, connected and strong Macedonia," Mickoski said ahead of Tuesday's signing of an agreement for a €20.9 million EBRD loan for procurement of electric locomotives for Macedonian Railways Transport.
According to the PM, the railway must be restored as a driver of exports and logistics, rather than a bottleneck for the economy.
"The environmental aspect is particularly important. By focusing on electric locomotives, we are moving towards zero emissions of pollutants. This is a direct contribution to the fight against air pollution, to environmental protection and to the development of clean, modern and sustainable transport. In conditions of energy transition, rail transport is becoming a key factor for an efficient, competitive and environmentally sustainable system. Investments in electric locomotives and modern corridors are fully aligned with government policies for integration into the European transport networks," Mickoski pointed out.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski, and Minister of Finance Gordana Dimitrieska Kochoska also attended Tuesday's agreement signing event.
