Government adopts draft-Law on Public Prosecutor's Office

Skopje, 30 December 2025 (MIA) - The Government adopted Tuesday the draft-Law on the Public Prosecutor's Office, one of the key steps in the implementation of the Reform Agenda's policy area 5 - Fundamentals, with a specific focus on the rule of law.

The adoption of this law is a significant step forward in the strengthening of the independence, efficiency and accountability of the Public Prosecutor's Office as the pillar of the legal system and a protector of the public interest. The law is produced as a result of a comprehensive process of analysis, consultations and alignment with European standards and best international practice, the Government said in a press release.

It adds that the law introduces changes in the procedure of electing a Chief Prosecutor, with clearly defined criteria and mechanisms that ensure a transparent, inclusive and merit-based approach in selecting the best candidates. The law incorporates relevant recommendations, so that the process is free of political influence and based exclusively on professionalism, integrity and credibility.

The law also stipulates precise and binding deadlines for the procedures of election and promotion, and introduces the principles of categorizing disciplinary responsibility of public prosecutors, thus contributing to increased legal certainty, predictability and functionality of the system, as well as augmented responsibility of public prosecutors.

The Government remains fully committed to judiciary reforms as a top priority and a necessary prerequisite for the country's Euro-integration progress. Adoption of the Law on the Public Prosecutor's Office is a concrete evidence of the commitment for strong, independent and professional institutions serving the citizens and the rule of law, reads the press release.
