Skopje, 30 December 2025 (MIA) — The new Law on the Public Prosecutor's Office introduces stricter standards for the selection, assessment, disciplinary liability and dismissal of public prosecutors, its objective being to strengthen the rule of law and meet the nation's obligations under the EU reform agenda, the Ministry of Justice said Tuesday in a press release.
According to the release, the Venice Commission gave high marks both to the newly drafted Law on the Council of Public Prosecutors and to the Law on the Public Prosecutor's Office, while also recommending the Constitution be amended to require a two-thirds majority for electing the chief public prosecutor.
The Ministry of Justice, however, said the recommendation requiring constitutional changes cannot be implemented at this stage.
The government is expected to go over the Law on Public Prosecutor's Office later Tuesday and the Council of Public Prosecutors is expected to review it by next week, advancing the EU reform agenda regarding the rule of law and fundamental values. mr/
