Trump and Putin to hold call over possible Ukraine war ceasefire

Trump and Putin to hold call over possible Ukraine war ceasefire

Moscow/Washington, 18 March 2025 (dpa/MIA) – US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin will talk on the telephone later on Tuesday about a possible end to the war in Ukraine.

Following an announcement by Trump, the Kremlin confirmed on Monday that the phone call was planned. According to the US president, he wants to end the war as quickly as possible.

This would be the second phone call between the two presidents since Trump returned to office in January.

Putin recently praised Trump's efforts to find a solution to the Ukraine conflict, which Moscow sparked by launching a full-scale invasion of its neighbour in February 2022.

However, the Kremlin chief has so far reacted cautiously to a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, which Washington has agreed with Kiev. Putin does not believe conditions for such a cessation have been met.

The Russian president has stated that the causes of the war must be clarified in order to find a lasting peace. For Russia, this includes a guarantee that Ukraine will not become a member of the Western military alliance NATO.

Trump has said that the chances of an agreement are very good. Ukraine, on the other hand, has repeatedly warned that there can be no solution to the conflict without its involvement.

The talks are also likely to lead to a meeting between Trump and Putin. This could possibly take place in Saudi Arabia, just like US discussions with Kiev last week, but no date has yet been set.
