Greece at disposal; five burn victims in Thessaloniki hospitals: gov't spokesman

Athens, 17 March 2025 (MIA) – We stand at the disposal of the neighbouring country, Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said Monday reiterating condolences to the families of the victims from the deadly fire in a Kochani nightclub and wishing speedy recovery of the dozens of injured people.

Greece is also at the disposal of the European rescue mechanism and will admit as many people as necessary, he responded at today’s press briefing to MIA’s question about Greece’s assistance following the tragedy in Kochani.

“So far, five people are admitted to hospitals in Thessaloniki. Two people with severe burns were transferred to the military hospital and three patients are being treated at the Papanikolaou hospital,” said Marinakis.

He mentioned that after the deadly incident and the phone call between the countries’ foreign ministers “Greece has admitted all burn victims as requested through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism following coordinated activities of the ministries of foreign affairs, health, civil protection and the Greek medical emergency service.”

Citing sources from Thessaloniki, MIA’s Athens correspondent reported earlier today that three people, two girls and a man, aged 25, 26 and 19, were hospitalized at the Papanikolaou hospital and are treated for severe burns. Two have already underwent surgery. Tracheotomy was performed on two patients at the military hospital in Thessaloniki.
