Skopje, 4 February 2026 (MIA) – President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova addressed Wednesday the World Governments Summit in Dubai being the keynote speaker at a session on demographic changes.
Speaking about population decrease, she said our country and the region are facing triple pressure, namely low birth rate, high emigration, and aging population, and shared projections showing that the Macedonian population could decrease from the current 1.8 million to 1.2 million until 2070 – a drop of 33 percent of the current population.

This triad of birth rate decline, emigration and aging, according to the President, decreased the number of working-age population and increased the burden on the healthcare, social and pension system.
According to Siljanovska-Davkova, it is exerting pressure on a small and open economy like ours.
She called for reform of the institutions, including the judiciary and public administration as well as accelerated digitization of public services.
Young people, said Siljanovska-Davkova, should get the credit they deserve as being promoters of change by putting them at the helm of digital and economic transformation and by engaging them in policy creation.
It is also crucial, she urged, to engage the diaspora as a catalyst of intellect, innovation and investments.
The President called for the creation of a demographically resilient society by creating a society in which people will stay to live and start families.
