Public Health Institute: 366 cases of chickenpox reported

Skopje, 14 March 2025 (MIA) — In February, health authorities logged 746 cases of acute bacterial and viral infections other than Covid-19, influenza, tuberculosis, AIDS, AFP and chronic hepatitis B and C, and HIV, according to the Public Health Institute in its latest report.

 

According to the PHI, 366 cases of chickenpox, 68 cases of scabies, and three cases of contagious mumps were reported to public health centers nationwide.

 

Health authorities also logged 22 cases of mononucleosis, an infection usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus; 13 reported cases of scarlet fever, a bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes; seven reported cases of Covid-19, the illness caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, also called SARS-CoV-2, that emerged in 2019; four reported cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis; four reported cases of viral hepatitis B; and one reported case of Legionnaires' disease, a severe form of pneumonia. 

 

In February, two confirmed cases of HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome, and one case of AIDS were reported to health authorities.

 

They also logged one death from AIDS in 2024, according to the PHI.

 

The largest number of viral infections was reported to the Skopje Public Health Center, and the lowest number was reported to the Ohrid Public Health Center. mr/
