Ljupcho Papazov resigns as Kochani mayor

Skopje, 17 March 2025 (MIA) – Kochani Mayor Ljupcho Papazov tendered an irrevocable resignation after the devastating fire that broke out in a Kochani nightclub, killing 59 people and injuring over 150.

“It is an immense loss! There are no words that could describe the pain we all feel. These children were our children. I knew most of them, I knew their families and I’m friends with some of them. The shock and devastation I feel will last my whole life. Kochani and Macedonia are covered in darkness after the tragedy and the void that is left is insurmountable,” Papazov said in a Facebook post Monday.

He urged the authorities to look into the accountability of all those involved adding he is at full disposal to the institutions.

“Not taking actions is also accountability. All details must be investigated, all shortcomings must be identified and all people who contributed to this tragedy must be held accountable. I’m at full disposal to the institutions. Although according to the law, I have no direct authorization in this case, I’m ready to respond to all questions, also involving my personal actions,” wrote the mayor.

Papazov also called on the prosecution to look into whether there is basis for him to be held responsible in line with the laws.

“For me, nothing will be the same after this tragedy! These were our children! Many people, rightfully so, criticized me for not making a public statement yesterday. But those who know me also know how devastated I am. It’s hard, it is hard for me to survive this. I’ve worked honourably my whole life! I could have never imagined that my term will end this way. I’m stepping down praying to God for the souls of our children, their families and for the people of Macedonia,” Papazov wrote on Facebook.
