Skopje, 11 March 2026 (MIA) — The country's tourism saw a 6.2% increase in January compared to the previous year, driven largely by a surge in domestic travel, according to figures released Wednesday by the State Statistical Office.
A total of 52,943 tourists visited the country in January 2026. Domestic travelers made up 38.2% of that figure and foreign tourists accounted for 61.8%.
While the number of visitors grew, the total number of overnight stays dropped to 103,983, a 2.7% decrease from January 2025. This decline was fueled by foreign tourists, whose overnight stays dropped 7.7% despite a 3.9% increase in their total arrivals.
Domestic tourism grew, with 10.1% more locals traveling and staying 4% more nights.
Most foreign visitors came from nearby countries. There were 6,732 Turkish tourists and 3,563 tourists arrived from Serbia, 3,256 from Bulgaria and 3,060 from Greece. mr/
