10.7% use public transport every day in EU, 9.6% in Macedonia

Skopje, 13 March 2026 (MIA) – In 2024, 10.7% of people used public transport every day as a key part of sustainable urban transport in the European Union. In Macedonia, around 7% of people use a city bus every day, 2.6% use a coach bus and 0.06% use a train (total 9.6%). The data show large differences, indicating that while in some Skopje municipalities around 19% of citizens most often use the city bus, in the cities and towns across the country people mostly use organized transport.  

Around 10.7% of people (16 years or over) in the EU used some sort of public transport every day, while 51% of people didn’t use public transport in 2024. In Macedonia, according to the latest State Statistical Office data in 2021, over a third of citizens most often use a car, while around 10% of people (15 years or over) most often use public transport, and over 8% use organized transport.

The highest daily use of public transport is in Hungary (19.6%), followed by Switzerland (19.2%) and Luxembourg (19%). At the other end of the scale were Cyprus (4.5%), Italy (5.1%) and Slovenia (6.2%).

Of the countries in the region, 16.8% of people use public transport daily in Albania, followed by Bulgaria 15.3%, Serbia 14.8% and Greece 6.7%.

According to Eurostat, in 2024, 10.7% of people (16 years or over) in the EU used some sort of public transport every day, 11.6% used it every week, 10.0% used it every month, and 17.1% used it less than once a month. On the other hand, 50.6% did not use public transport. 

Among EU countries, the share of people who did not use public transport in 2024 was highest in Cyprus, with 85% of the population, followed by Italy (68.0%), Portugal (67.8%), France (65.1%), Slovenia (61.6%) and Greece (61.3%). At the other end of the scale were Luxembourg, where 15.7% of people did not use public transport in 2024, Estonia (26.6%) and Sweden (26.7%). 

When it comes to people using public transport every week, Luxembourg registered the highest share, with 23.1% of the people using it, followed by Latvia (19.2%) and Estonia (18.2%).
