US and Mexico say planned tariffs to be suspended for one month

Mexico City/Washington, 3 February 2025 (dpa/MIA) - The United States is suspending its previously announced tariffs of 25% on imports from Mexico for one month, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and US President Donald Trump announced on Monday.

Trump, posting on his Truth Social platform, said he spoke with Sheinbaum and they agreed to suspend the tariffs, which were to take effect on Tuesday, following Sheinbaum's agreement to "immediately supply 10,000 Mexican soldiers" at the border with the United States.

Sheinbaum confirmed the suspension in a post on X.

"These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country," Trump wrote.

During the one-month suspension US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and high-level representatives of Mexico will meet to try to resolve the issues.

"I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a 'deal' between our two Countries," Trump wrote.

Trump had planned to institute 25% tariffs against Mexico for what he said was retaliation for what he has called an "open border" and the illegal crossing of the deadly opiod fentanyl into the US, which has killed tens of thousand of US citizens.
