Orban: Strategic difference within EU clear to see after US elections – some want war, others peace

Skopje, 4 March 2025 (MIA) - The strategic difference that emerged after the presidential elections in the United States is clear to see, i.e., the fact that there are some who want war, while others want peace, said Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban at a joint press conference Tuesday with Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski in Budapest.

“In Paris I will speak to the President of France, then on Thursday the summit in Brussels will be held. What could have been concealed in the past and mended with communication, smiles and press conferences, cannot be done so with these tools anymore. The strategic difference that has emerged after the US presidential elections is clear to see, i.e., the fact that there are some who want war, while others want peace. With only the Vatican and Slovakia, besides Hungary, saying they want peace,” Orban said.

The EU will have to tackle this challenge at the summit in Brussels, said the Hungarian PM, noting that the “difference” is “insurmountable”.

“The difference would not have been significant if the US hadn’t joined our side, but I wouldn’t like to brag about our position, but of course we are on the same side. Since then, this difference cannot be surmounted. We need to tackle this challenge on Wednesday and Thursday,” Orban said.

Regarding his phone call with US President Donald Trump on Sunday evening, Orban stressed that Hungary has close relations with Washington on all levels and a great reason to enhance cooperation due to their “shared values”.

“We have a greater reason, a deeper reason for cooperation because we have shared values. We are in a civilizational struggle, and we are fighting this struggle together with the US and some other partners,” Orban said.

Quizzed about Tuesday’s events in Serbia’s Parliament where opposition MPs set off flares and smoke bombs in support of the anti-corruption protests in the country, Orban said this is Serbia’s “private business” but claimed there have been amplified attempts to destabilize Serbia, Hungary and Slovakia since the electoral victory of the “patriots” in the US. The Hungarian PM said the “same mechanism” is also “being used against Hungary”.

“If you still remember our fight against Soros’ institutions, then you know what I am talking about. We are planning for this fight to end by the end of spring,” Orban said.
