New wave of blasts heard in Lebanon

Beirut, 18 September 2024 (dpa/MIA) - A new wave of blasts was heard across Beirut's southern suburbs and southern Lebanon on Wednesday, witnesses in the area told dpa.

"We are hearing the same sounds we heard yesterday," one witness said.

A source in the pro-Iranian Lebanese militia Hezbollah said wireless devices like walkie-talkies had exploded without giving any further details, and a Lebanese security source later confirmed that it was walkie-talkies that had exploded, some of them in cars and some which were being carried by Hezbollah members on motorbikes.

The state-run Lebanese News Agency (NNA) said at least three people were killed in the new wave of explosions in the western Bekaa Valley.

The sound of blasts coincided with Hezbollah mourning some of the people who died in Tuesday's attack, which killed 12 and wounded some 2,800.

On Tuesday afternoon, pagers carried by Hezbollah fighters exploded in areas in Beirut's southern suburbs and in southern and eastern Lebanon. The attack was blamed on Israel by Hezbollah.

People in the southern port city of Tyre reported hearing the same sounds and said ambulances were racing through the streets after the blasts were heard.
