Mucunski - Szijjártó: Hungary as EU presidency holder to make efforts to accelerate enlargement process

Skopje, 12 July 2024 (MIA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Timcho Mucunski held a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjártó at the NATO Summit in Washington. 

In the meeting, the ministers praised the development of excellent bilateral cooperation all the while welcoming the milestone – 30 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries. At the same time, the mutual efforts for further development of sectoral cooperation, with an accent on the economy, investments and business relations were emphasized, the Foreign Ministry said. 

Talks, said the press release, also focused on the country’s European dossier with Hungary’s strong support for our EU full-fledged membership being reaffirmed.

Mucunski voiced satisfaction with the fact that one of the priorities of the Hungarian EU presidency is enlargement with the Western Balkan countries, a shared interest for the countries in the region and the Union as a whole. 

“We highly appreciate the continued Hungarian support for our EU integration path. We are committed to the reform processes and we pledge to accelerate our accession to the EU. Membership of the Western Balkan countries in the Union has no alternative and will contribute to reinforcing the overall regional and European stability,” Mucunski said as cited in the press release.

Views were also shared about the country’s alliance within NATO, the need of the two countries to resume their cooperation within the Alliance all the while stressing that the Washington summit, which marks NATO’s 75th anniversary, will contribute to preserving global peace and security.
