Macedonian-Bulgarian commission discusses recommendations for seventh-grade textbooks

Skopje, 21 February 2025 (MIA) — Members of the Joint Multidisciplinary Commission of Experts on Historical and Educational Issues between Bulgaria and North Macedonia at their 34th meeting held Thursday and Friday in Skopje discussed proposed recommendations for Macedonian textbooks for the seventh grade as well as potential joint celebrations, according to the Macedonian experts.

 

The meeting, they added, was held in a dynamic and constructive atmosphere.

 

"In the spirit of building trust, the Macedonian members of the Commission have strived to maintain a proactive approach in line with positive European practices and experiences," the Macedonian experts said.

 

The previous meeting was held in Sofia on Dec. 12 and 13, when the members reviewed proposed recommendations for Macedonian textbooks and considered topics to discuss in the first half of 2025.

 

The next meeting of the expert commission will be held in April in Sofia.

 

The Joint Multidisciplinary Commission of Experts on Historical and Educational Issues between Bulgaria and North Macedonia was formed under the Friendship Treaty between the countries signed on Aug. 1, 2017.

 

So far, the history and education experts have agreed on recommendations to jointly commemorate St. Cyril and Methodius, St. Naum of Ohrid, St. Clement of Ohrid and Tsar Samuel.

 

They have also adopted five recommendations for changes in Macedonian history textbooks for the sixth grade and Bulgarian history textbooks for the fifth grade. mr/
