Kremlin condemns assassination attempt on Trump

Moscow, 14 July 2024 (MIA) – The Kremlin condemns any violence in the context of politics, spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Sunday following the attempted assassination of former U.S. president Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

"We do not at all believe that the attempt to eliminate and assassinate Trump was organised by the current administration, but the atmosphere that was created by this administration during the political struggle, around candidate Trump, has provoked what America is confronting today," said Peskov.

He extended condolences to the victims of the attack, adding that the Russian President Vladimir Putin does not intend to call Trump in light of the incident.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the United States should "take stock of its policies of incitement to hatred against political opponents, countries and nations".

Commenting on the attempted assassination on Trump, she denounced U.S. support for Ukraine.

"Perhaps it would be better to use this money to fund the American police and other services that are supposed to ensure law and order in the United States," Zakharova posted on Telegram.

Russia's RT outlet published a statement "when all other options for getting rid of an inconvenient president have been exhausted, good old Lee Harvey Oswald is brought in", referring to Lee Harvey Oswald who assassinated former U.S. president John F. Kennedy in 1963.
