Iran summons four European ambassadors in response to new sanctions

Tehran, 12 September 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Iran's Foreign Ministry on Thursday summoned four European ambassadors in response to new sanctions for allegedly supplying ballistic missiles to Russia for use in Ukraine.

The diplomats from Britain, Germany, France and the Netherlands were called in to the ministry, state news agency IRNA reported.

Tehran has vehemently denied the accusation made by Ukraine's Western allies, including the United States, on Tuesday.

Majid Nili Ahmadabadi, the Foreign Ministry's director for Western Europe, said the West had adopted a "hostile policy" towards Iran and that there would be an appropriate response to the latest measures.

Ships and companies allegedly involved in supplying Russia with Iranian weapons were sanctioned. Among them was Iran Air, which flies to several destinations in Europe.

Iran is increasingly politically isolated due to its controversial nuclear programme, human rights violations and Middle East policy.

In recent years, the leadership has responded by strengthening its ties with Russia and China.

Tehran has supported Russia's invasion of Ukraine with combat drones, Kiev and Western powers say, although Iran's government also denies the transfer of these weapons.
