Farmers’ protests to close two border crossings with Greece

Farmers’ protests to close two border crossings with Greece

Athens, 11 December 2025 (MIA) - Greek farmers, who have parked their tractors at several border crossings, including the Evzoni (Bogorodica) and Niki (Medzitlija) crossings with North Macedonia, will close the border to traffic for several hours on Thursday, MIA’s Athens correspondent reports.

The blockade at the Evzoni border crossing is expected to last from 12 PM to 4 PM and from 6 PM to 10 PM local time, during which traffic will be completely halted except for trucks carrying Greek products.

At the Niki border crossing, according to Greek news agency ANA-MPA, the border will be closed for four hours, starting at 11 AM local time.

Farmers have also set up blockades at the border crossings with Bulgaria and Türkiye, but the several-hour blockades apply only to trucks.

Across all of Greece, from the northernmost to the southernmost point, farmers have so far set up over 60 blockades, which have been gradually increasing since November 30.

The main blockade is in central Greece, at Nikaia near Larissa, on the Thessaloniki–Athens motorway, where traffic is being redirected to secondary roads. The committee responsible for the farmers' blockades nationwide has scheduled a meeting for Saturday, at which a decision will be made on the next steps.

For Friday, farmers from northern Greece have announced a protest and a symbolic closure of the port of Thessaloniki.

The farmers’ protests began on November 30 due to increased production costs and low selling prices for their products, as well as a scandal involving European agricultural subsidies. Their main demand is the payment of overdue subsidies.

Blockades have been set up on a number of motorways and local roads throughout Greece, making traffic more difficult and redirecting it to secondary streets
