Madrid, 29 January 2026 (dpa/MIA) - At least five people were killed in a winter storm in Portugal, officials and news reports said.
The Atlantic storm hit the coast early on Wednesday morning with wind speeds of up to more than 170 kilometres per hour.
A driver died during when his vehicle was hit by a falling tree north of Lisbon.
Further north, in the town of Carvide, one person was struck by flying metal sheets and another was buried in their partially collapsed house, according to the state television channel RTP, citing civil protection authorities.
Near Silves, a Dutch woman was found dead in her car, which had been submerged in water.
A fifth fatality was recorded in Marinha Grande, RTP reported, citing the city administration.
Fallen trees, rivers bursting their banks after heavy rainfall and snow falling at approximately 400 metres above sea level brought train services to a halt and made roads impassable.
Schools had to closed, and at times up to 1 million households were without power, RTP reported.
The storm has since moved eastwards towards Spain, where the authorities have issued warnings of high waves along the coasts and snow even at lower altitudes.
The Spanish weather service Aemet warned of gusts with wind speeds of up to 90 kilometres per hour for Ibiza.
