Working on long-term solution for structural and planned reduction of inflation: Minister

Skopje, 24 July 2025 (MIA) – Minister of Economy and Labor Besar Durmishi told journalists Thursday an expected increase in prices occurred after the expiration of the Government’s price measures, but, he said, inflation is already stabilizing. The Minister noted that work is underway on a long-term solution that will ensure a structural and planned reduction of inflation.

“After the end of the measures, there was a certain increase in prices, which was expected. However, it is important to note that inflation in June was up by 0.8 percent, while in May it rose by 1.5 percent. Although we had a rise in inflation, it is stabilizing. We are monitoring inflation after the end of the measures. Of course, we need to wait a few months for the market to stabilize,” Durmishi said.

According to the Minister, core inflation, which is growing, can be controlled through mechanisms by the National Bank and the Ministry of Finance. However, he said, this can be implemented only if additional interventions such as margin caps are avoided.

“We are currently working on a long-term solution, such as increasing domestic production of food, thereby reducing imports and directly influencing inflation. The Ministry of Agriculture and other institutions are included in this strategy so we can ensure a structural and planned reduction on inflation,” Durmishi said.

The Minister also stated that by the end of next week, at the first session of the Economic and Social Council, the Ministry will deliver the methodology for the average consumer basket that will include all products needed by a four-member family.

“We will have one methodology that will include all products needed by a four-member family and we will publish the amount needed every month,” the Minister said, adding that work is underway on five other consumer baskets.

“We will also have one [consumer basket] for retirees, for students, for a three-member family, they all have different needs. Retirees spend more on medication, young people on something else,” Durmishi added.
